MOUNTAIN GATE INTERCLUB - March 29th
For the fourth year, we have been invited back to Mountain Gate Tennis for an interclub event! It is one of the larger interclub events that we have as we can bring twelve teams. We need to have four teams of 4.5's; four teams of 4.0's and four teams of 3.5's - mixed doubles. The usual format has been two rounds of mixed doubles and one round of same sex doubles, however, Kris Jordan, Mountain Gates' Events Director, said that he was going to try to have something different this year. It would be really different if we beat them this year...they trounced us soundly last year!
Lunch will be included at this beautiful setting after the tennis, so grab your best partner and sign up. The entry fee is the same as last year, $25 per player. Just a gentle reminder that all interclub events are for members only...no guests please. The competition is fierce, so not only bring your best partner, bring your best game (ha).
Send your entry form to: Marguerite Jorgensen, 560 E Channel Rd, Santa Monica, CA 90402.

SANTA MONICA TENNIS CLUB "HELLO" TOURNAMENT - RECAP
The weather was not the best, but we said "no" to the rain enough and the event went off with the upper level group going first with all 24 players battling for 3 - 4 hours. We did have a cancellation at 7:30 am due to illness, but fortunately a relative new member arrived on the scene and filled in quite nicely - thank you
Carola Goodman!
The lower level group was organized for 24 players. There were two no-shows; however, a new member
Chris Lo had brought a friend,
Randy Hill, who filled in quite nicely. The other no-show was female with no replacement and an injury (
Kara Glover turned her ankle) at the end that made the competition a bit strange, but no less enjoyable.
We did have several guests who are potential members which were brought in by SMTC members which helped to make the 24 people necessary for a perfect round number!
The female winners of the morning division were
Katherine Spetner, first place with 31 games; Jillian Mayer was second with 27 games and close thirds were
Gillian Cook and
Shirley McClaine with 26 games each. The male winners of the morning division were
Luc DeShepper with 33 games; with
Jim Castagnola with 31 games, followed by
Bob McGuire with 30 games…pretty close, huh!
The female winners of the afternoon division were
Joanie Rippner, first place with 25 games;
Patti Kingston and
Carole Reston tied for second place with 23 games each, followed by a guest,
Ros Mandellberg with 21 games. The male winners of the afternoon division were
Daniel Bianco with 27 games; a new member
Kyle Shapero was second with 22 games; and third place was
Stan Weinberg with 21 games.
Trophies were presented to the first and second place winners in each division. Thanks very much to all of the participants - hope you enjoyed the day.
The dinner at El Cholo was fabulous!! (No shortage of food this year or slow service.)

PACIFIC PALISADES INTERCLUB RECAP - JANUARY 25TH
One more time, the Sun God shined down on our tennis world when SMTC marched up to the Pacific Palisades with eight members to battle with the Pacific Palisades team. Strangely enough their team seemed to be populated with a number of team members that closely resembled SMTC members (guess there is dual citizenship). The Santa Monica team won 152 games and Pacific Palisades team won 103 games, with the individual winners for Santa Monica of
Mike Schmidt, Luc De Shepper, Gillian Cook and Cassie Fisbeck; Palisade winners were
Katherine Spetner, Ramesh Sahwney, Julie Morris and June Lissandrello. The refreshments were furnished by SMTC, with Katherine outdoing herself with the hot carrot soup!
SMTC promised the Palisades group we would have a rematch at Reed Park towards the end of April.

GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP/COMMON COURTESY
When events are set up, like tournaments/Friday night socials, they are only successful if there is an even number of players. The "no show" is inexcusable because it affects everyone - in the case of the Hello tournament where there were twenty-four people set up to play and only twenty three people arrived, it affected one-half of all the players. If you do not intend to play, please do not call thirty minutes prior to the start...or worst case scenario do not even show up or call to give an excuse.
We do understand about injuries and illness - if this happens, please try to find your own replacement and call the tournament director as soon as possible.

MEMBERS PAGE
It was nice to see Anoosh Askari back on the courts - he has been a long time member and was a board member once also.
=====
On the injured list -
Terry Barris;
Millie Christie is have a knee replacement and
David Morton still is having knee problems;
André Charvet is also out for several more weeks. Best wishes to
Kara Glover who sprained her ankle at the Hello Tournament..she felt really bad about having to miss the party as she wanted to visit with everyone.
=====
Andrew Rubin, a long time member, has moved to Florida, so he resigned from the club. Also
Leonard Strezlin has resigned.
=====
Tom Boysen also resigned because he does not have time to play with us.
=====
The dreaded "Wall of Shame" list is available at the courts on Sundays for members that have not renewed - is your name there? Still a great bargain for membership.
=====
Another reminder - this is your page - please use it! Also if you would like to write an article to appear for the April/May newsletter - be our guest.

FRIDAY NIGHT SOCIALS RETURN!!! Delayed St Patrick's Day Social
Friday, March 20th, we will try to round up 24 tennis players for this round robin social event which was so popular in previous years, where you do not have to furnish a partner. This is also recession proof - no increase for this year - $12 per entry. Where else can you play for almost 2 ˝ hours with nice people, have snacks, water and soft drinks, with balls and courts furnished for this low price? I will be taking the entries, but will not be here the 20th, so
Ron Elmer will be in charge. Ron's phone #818-903-2170, which you can use on Friday to contact him.
Please send in entry form by Wednesday, March 18th to Marguerite Jorgensen

MORGAN RUN TENNIS ADVENTURE - MAY 23, 24 AND 25TH

We had promised this trip since last year and here it is. The accommodations are upgraded to executive rooms on the golf course, includes dinner Sunday night, cocktail parties Saturday and Sunday, interclub with Morgan Run on Sunday morning and court time for our own tennis group Saturday after 11 o'clock and Monday morning. We will also have courts available after the interclub if anyone wants more tennis!
The arrangements for the rooms, the dinner and the cocktail parties are under the supervision of Joan Ello, who formerly ran The Tennis Players. People who have attended her trips previously can tell you that she puts on everything in a first class style.
We can promise you lots of good tennis and congenial friends. Morgan Run has upgraded their gym, spa and swimming pool, so please join us. Joan has also made arrangements if you want to arrive on Friday instead of waiting until Saturday morning to leave for the resort.
The rates are: Saturday, Sunday night, check out Monday noon - $275 per person; double occupancy; three nights (Friday, Saturday and Sunday night) would be $360 per person, double occupancy. If you would prefer to not share your room, the price would be $399 for two nights.
