2010 ANNIVERSARY TOURNAMENT - Sunday, July 11
SMTC IS 82 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR!

We will be at Reed Park for this annual event, as per usual. This is again, a mixed doubles round robin event, but you do not select your partner, so you change partners each round. We will furnish the balls, the snacks and trophies. Ideally, we will have two divisions, one for the morning and one at noon...this means 12 men and 12 women in each division, with five rounds and no byes if we have enough support.

As you may, or may not know, SMTC has been run all this time strictly by volunteers donating their own time and effort, so please members; support your club by entering this event! Due to the budget constraints of some people, we are lowering the price per person by $5 from previous years, so the entry is $20 per person.

As this is written, we do not have a Tournament Director (maybe soon but not right now) so send your entries to: Marguerite Jorgensen, 560 E Channel Rd, Santa Monica, CA 90402.

Click here for the entry form.

Thanks - Marguerite

UPCOMING INTERCLUB EVENTS

Rich Rollins, former head of Tennis Division, Parks & Rec Dept., is anxious for us to have an interclub with Westchester and also to visit his group in Port Hueneme. Ron/Elsa are working on the details for the trip to Port Hueneme. We just have to coordinate schedules between the two groups. The tentative date is August 7th and 8th, but please make your note in pencil!

We will have an interclub with Malibu on August 21st on their premises...Diane Brooks is in charge of this one and we will have complete details later!

Also - in the future is an interclub with the Warner Center Club...it was agreed that it would be better in September/October than July and August because it is on the rooftop! More details later also.

FRIDAY NIGHT EVENTS - AUGUST 20 COMING UP!

Thank you to all the members who took part in our June 18th Friday night social. It went down with very few hitches and was a great success. We really had some challenging players and it was great fun for everyone. As far as who did what to whom: In the Ladies category, Gwendolyn Coleman and Jane Dubovy tied for 1st place with 23 points. Congratulations to both of you. You both were definitely on your game that night and deserved to win! 2nd place was also a tie with Carrel Hoffman and Sofia Agres both achieving 22 points. Well done. Marguerite Jorgensen gets the bronze with a respectable 3rd place, with 21 points. Nice Job!

For the men: Frank Glabach and Jim Castagnola tied for 1st place with 29 points each. They kind of left us in the dust...We'll get 'em next time. Bob Shubert came in 2nd place with 22 points, and Joe Thigpen captured third with 21 points. Very well done. We all were winners participating in this great evening of tennis.

Remember: post date your calendars for our next Friday night social ("HOT AUGUST NIGHTS") event happening on August 20 and get signed up early because these events are filling up faster now that the summer months are upon us. Click here for the entry form.

Thanks sincerely,
Joel Hoffman

La Costa Trip was a Success - Tennis, Tennis, and More Tennis!

We had a wonderful Memorial Weekend outing in La Costa. 28 members/ non-members made it on the trip. From the very beginning, everyone was stunned by the beauty of the La Costa Resort grounds. Marguerite Jorgensen was in charge of tennis open play as well as our informal Tennis tournament. Tennis started at 12pm on Saturday, with an assortment of clay courts and hard courts and went on all weekend until we couldn't handle any more tennis! It was impossible to set up a formal tournament on Saturday as people arrived at many different times.

Our group checked-in at the La Costa resort on Saturday May 29th. That same evening, we had a cocktail party in our trip director's room from 6pm to 8pm, both the conversation and the wine flowed. Later, the group separated into dancing, Italian restaurants and the local Legends Restaurant at La Costa. We celebrated Keiji Okita's 21st birthday to end the evening...imagine being that young!

On Sunday, we had tennis, and more tennis. The wonderful San Diego Tennis Network organized an interclub tournament at the Rancho Valencia Resort, a top rate tennis resort! We had fun and tennis in the sun. After that, some of their members were gracious enough to host a wonderful poolside barbeque. More conversation and wine were flowing into the late hours.

On Monday, guess what! We played some more tennis in the morning on clay and hard courts and then headed home or stopped for lunch depending on everyone's schedule.

This trip was a success on many levels. The resort was beautiful and welcoming, arranging tennis courts was quite convenient and everyone room was upgraded from a standard room to a spacious resort room.

Feedback:
Elsa, I was impressed by organizational skills, you got us a super deal in such plush resort. I thought everything went smoothly (no drama) and it seemed like everyone had a great time. Marguerite, thanks for all your work behind the scenes. Looking forward to the next trip..........
Carol Reston

Just wanted to take a moment and offer my sincere thanks for a wonderful tennis trip! Thanks so much for the effort and the hard work you put into it. It was a wonderful place and the rooms were simply fantastic and well situated near the courts with all the amenities. Is was a nice memorable experience and everyone enjoyed themselves too I'm glad I did not miss this and your professional organization paved the way for a successful weekend.

(Marguerite's note: I personally think that Elsa did an outstanding, professionally organized trip. Sue from San Diego Tennis Network went out of her way to provide us with the inter-club event that could not be organized at La Costa. Sue is working on bringing her group up here to visit us! I am sure we will have more contact with this lively tennis group)

MEMBERS PAGE

Joe Thigpen has decided to move to the other side of the country - Florida - the end of August. We certainly will miss his cheerful style and good sportsmanship! It is our loss and Florida's gain.

It is nice to see that some of the injured ones are back in action - like Kathy Reilly and Gwendolyn Coleman.

Shirley McClaine is out for a month due to a back problem…take care, Shirley.

Dina Crump is organizing an A2 (4.0) team to play in the Westside Ladies League under the auspices of Santa Monica Tennis Club. Dina's team will pay all of their own entry fees and club charges, so it will bring more recognition to Santa Monica Tennis Club and will not cost us anything...a win-win situation.

MEMBER/GUEST MIXED DOUBLES TOURNAMENT - JUNE 13TH - RECAP

Well, this one could not have had more happen than it should be a Friday the 13th! First of all, we had so few entries that one of the reserved courts was cancelled...then low and behold, here came more entries! To make matters worse, due to more confusion, one team in the upper division did not arrive! It was the first time in a very long time that we had a bye for one round…what a shock to some people…guess they have not played in other tournaments for some time.

Anyway, the weather was mild and sunny for the morning session, so Dina Crump and her partner, Shohachi Handea, won first place with 16 games; Tanisha Byrd-Mason, with her husband, Todd, as a guest, played very respectively and tied for second place with Amanda Cunningham and Frank Glabach, with 15 games, followed by Sandy Zhong and Michael Pulford for third place. Thanks to Dina Crump, we gained a new member -welcome Tanisha!

The afternoon session consisted of four teams, so we played two pro sets and a tie breaker if there were split sets. The most winning couple was Carrel and Joel Hoffman (no surprise there), followed by Jessica Hoffman and Stan Weinberg.

Thank you every one who participated and were such good sports.

WINNERS!

The USTA/Santa Monica Tennis Club Men's 3.5 Spring League finished up in lively fashion, taking our final win over the Centinela team up in Rustic Canyon. We have ended our regular season with a superior record of 7 wins with only 1 hiccup. There were lots of exciting matches along the way. Two doubles teams: Rob Baumann with Joel Hoffman and Joe Hanania/Keiji Okita had terrific wins at Vermont Canyon against the L.A. Hollywood team. Our bout with Mulholland was nearly a rout, and all the players played their hearts out throughout. Kyle Shapero didn't drop a match through the season. The team is looking forward to Sectionals in Costa Mesa late August. I am proud to be captain of such an impressive group.

FOURTH ANNUAL BLOCK PARTY

Well, I will have to say that it was not the most pleasant day and the attendance was at the minimal, but SMTC members turned out to help and we were ready on time! Members who helped in the first shift was Ron Elmer, Vincent Ferrer, Randy Chow (after he finished his marathon!), Joe Thigpen, Eric Rabinowitz and Anosh Askari , (balloon experts); and Gordon Berman, followed by Carrie Gold, Klavdia Goldshteyn, Elsa Atayan, Gwendolyn Coleman, Mary Sunshine, Bruce Schelden and Bill Nissley. Jim Castagnola helped on the court with the Doubles Clinic which is still a popular event.

Harry Weiss was our announcer and he introduced Micah Schultz-Akerson, city of Santa Monica Community Services coordinator; Neil Carey , Vice-Chair Santa Monica Community Recreation Services (who also was on the Super Seniors 7.0 team that won the USTA National title); our own Diane Brooks, USTA representative, Bill Nissley, Tournament Director for city of Santa Monica (who is also part of Tennis Patrons); Gene Desroshers, popular Cardio Tennis instructor, Richard Goldenson, head coach of Women's tennis, Santa Monica College; and, we had excellent professional assistance with Will Collins, representing Head/Penn; Greg Wikstrom , representing Prince. The pro who assisted with the double's clinic was John Neetre and Buster McCoy, from Riviera Tennis, came to help on the court were the fastest serve contest was held.

We had exhibitions by the West Side Acers, Zac Resnic and Alexander Sholetsev; Santa Monica College Girl's team, Anastasia Eliseeva and Masami Hashimoto. Santa Monica College team won the Championship in the Western State Conference, and had a final team ranking of #2 in CA. Congratulations to Richard and his team!

We used all six courts as Head/Penn was on Court #1; Gene's Cardio was Court #2; Prince was Court #3; Double's Clinic - Court #4; Fast Serve - Court #5 and Diane Brook's - Kid's Court #6.

KIDS DAY at CITY OF SANTA MONICA BLOCKPARTY

"No holding back with fun on the KIDS DAY Court" was the theme for Court #5 at Santa Monica's 4th Annual Blockparty.

"This year's BlockParty Committee went all out for the kids", was the observation of many parents.

All ages and levels of play, just step on the court kids and you'll receive a free USTA BlockParty T-shirt and USTA hat.

Have fun "Hitting for Prizes" while practicing forehands, backhands and serves.

Music, games, free lessons and prizes...for as long as kids wanted to stay and play! 8 and under kids won awards playing on 36' courts with USTA's new QuickStart Tennis format. 10 and under kids compete on 60' courts (until they can successfully serve the ball from the baseline of a 72' court). The next step for these youngsters is joining Santa Monica's JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS Team on the way up.

A gazillion thanks to VINCENT FERRER for lugging endless heavy amounts of "Kids Zone" equipment to and from "Kids Court".

And thank you RANDY CHOW! Your great athletic 'marathon lungs' inflated many kids targets and personally saved me from passing out.

From the Santa Monica Tennis Club, we thank the City of Santa Monica's Anita Ybarra and Micah Schultz-Anderson, The Tennis Patrons of Santa Monica and The Southern California Tennis Association for celebrating and developing Community Tennis.

SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT YEAR!
