TURKEY SHOOT TOURNAMENT - NOVEMBER 13TH, 2011
This annual tournament was the smallest number of entries that we have ever had - only one session with twenty participants, we did have two guests, Edie Estrada, and a familiar face to a lot of us, Brandi Wisner, who brought her good tennis game with her...thanks to Carmel Valencia. We did have an equal number of female/male participants. We were also graced with a really new member, Tristan Milani, another Australian added to our roster. The team of the Pilgrims really trounced the poor Native Americans like 198 to 92 (that's a slaughter).

The highest numbers of games won was Carmel Valencia with 30 games and she chose to receive $15 cash in lieu of a trophy; two of the men, Daryl Foster and David King split the high game scores for the men with 29 games each...Daryl went for the cash and David preferred a trophy (which he will receive soon)!

(Thanks everyone who attended - hope you enjoyed my last tournament)

It was all for a good cause as shown by the letter received:

UPWARD BOUND HOUSE SENT THIS THANK YOU FOR THE PROCEEDS FROM THE TURKEY SHOOT TOURNAMENT:

Dear Friends at Santa Monica Tennis Club,

Thank you for your generous donation of (5) $10 gift cards to Ralph's, 1 large box of assorted, non-perishable food items and 1 large bag (approximately 20) Gatorade drinks on November 17, 2011.

With today's current economic crisis threatening homelessness for thousands of families here in Los Angeles, Upward Bound House relies on your support, now more than ever.

If you haven't already seen our facilities, we would be delighted to personally take you on a tour. There's no better way to understand the impact of your support than to see first-hand the work that we do. We have also re-launched our web site where you can take a virtual tour of our programs and stay up to date on our efforts to address family homelessness. Our site is: www.upwardboundhouse.org.

INTERCLUB AT MULHOLLAND TENNIS CLUB - DECEMBER 18, 2011
Ten fearless Santa Monica members went up the hill (so to speak) to play the club that beat us badly last year and we did turn the tables, so to speak. Mulholland has a new director of tennis and there was some confusion as to who was playing with whom, but mostly it worked out just fine. There were mixed doubles, men's doubles and two sets of ladies' doubles. Raul Hernandez and Mike Schmidt won their first match 6/2; 6/2; Craig Kaufman and Harry Weiss won their first match 6/2; 6/3; Joel Hoffman and Phoebe Neil had a long match that had to be stopped as everyone else had finished - their scores were 6/4; 4/2; Lupe Lopez and Dina Crump won their match 6/4; 6/2 and Carrel Hoffman and Carol Reston only got to play one match and it was 6/1.

The second round of matches was Mike Schmidt and Phoebe Neil who split sets 3/6; 6/7; Raul Hernandez and Lupe Lopez won 6/2; 6/1; the Mulholland players thinned out and two of the Santa Monica teams wanted to play each other and their scores do not count, so the last team to play was Craig Kaufman and Marguerite Jorgensen and they lost 6/3 and had to quit at 3/3 (Craig is such a gentleman!). Dina Crump injured her elbow and could not play again…sorry, Dina - take care of yourself.

This winds up the season of interclubs, but Diane Brooks has already a firm commitment from Toluca Lake (to be played there) and several other clubs have committed but the firm dates have not been set.

CHANGE IN RULES FOR CHALLENGE COURT EFFECTIVE 1/08/2012
A vote was taken, and passed at the Board Meeting 12/11/2011, to alter the current rules governing the Challenge Court.

A: all four players will exit the court after eight games have been completed (tie breaker will continue if required). This change will, it is hoped, generate more playing time for the waiting teams signed up.

B: If only one team should be signed up as next opponents, the winning team will be allowed to play another match. This model will be adopted for four consecutive Sundays and will be repealed by Board vote should it prove to be unworkable.

MEMBER'S PAGE
Former member Roger Breternitz sent the following email and will pay $5 for this ad:

Hi Marguerite,
Long time no see and talk. How's things at Reed Park? Hope you're doing well, had a great Christmas and planning for a fun New Years. I'm sending you a little announcement about my book, I just finally completed and got up on Amazon. Thought it might be interesting reading to put in your newsletter in the "About our members" or "Friends we knew" ...page. Also I'd like to inquire how much it would be to take out a small ad for the book. It's mainly about how to increase your level of winning at your favorite sport, and life in general, so it's great for tennis players on the mental side. Let me know when you get a chance. Included also is a flyer about the book.
Thanks so much
Roger W. Breternitz

ANNOUNCEMENT: My book "WINNING! It's a Lot More FUN!" is here, just in time for Christmas, AND Amazon has just discounted it from $14.95 to around $10. It makes a great gift that can change someone's life even your OWN!

WINNING! Its a Lot More Fun! (2 years in the making) is finally available on Amazon.com by clicking here. It is simply how your mental state and thoughts influence your physical world and attract to you what you want, or DON'T want.

No matter what your sport or goal, this has methodology on how to make these goals become a cold hard reality, and most everyone can find a gem of information in there that may sway the fickle forces of life and fate your way just once (or more).

It is available on Kindle and Nook as well as in paperback form. Click here to get the book on Amazon.com.

Correction - I gave the age of Sasha Kashemirov as 14 in the last newsletter and actually he is 13 and improving steadily in his tennis. Please accept my apologies - Marguerite

Mary Mathews is almost recovered from her foot surgery and is almost ready to get back on the courts...will be nice to see her smiling face and terrific game back on the courts.

Don't forget to bring tennis balls to the tennis court for open play - your turn. Also, this is your page...if you want to have something published, please let me know. - Marguerite

Richard Sparno, Mike's brother has joined SMTC...nice recruiting Mike!

Note from the President and Newsletter Editor
There has been some significant changes in the Santa Monica Tennis Board. As announced last newsletter, Bruce Schelden, long-time treasurer resigned after many years of service. Katherine Spetner, our innovative Membership Director, moved back to Australia to begin a year or so of traveling. We have Carol Reston taking the position of Treasurer, a position she is quite capable of doing. David King accepted the Membership Director position and is very eager about his responsibilities. Jane DuBovy accepted the position of Tournament Director, which was vacant most of the year and she has definitive ideas of how we should increase membership and bring new ideas into SMTC. The remaining members of the board are Joel Hoffman, Vice President/Social Director; Eric Rabinowitz, Secretary; Carrel Hoffman, Director at Large; Diane Brooks, Interclub Director and Elsa Atayan, Trip Director. We also have Bruce Janger in charge of the Ladder and Tom Johnson, our capable Webmaster.

The only thing we are now lacking is a Newsletter Editor...any takers? I have heard from many of you that you do not read the newsletter, so maybe we could eliminate the publication? Some people would like to have it printed and mailed out and as long as we are in the 21st century, this should be opposed by all of you as a waste of paper and big savings in labor and postage, so ultimately this is one of the reasons dues are not increased for the past four years.

We are entering the 84th year of Santa Monica Tennis Club and it is continuing to be run strictly by volunteers...so give yourselves a pat on the back and keep helping the club by paying your dues and participating in events.

- Marguerite Jorgensen, President

NEW DIRECTORS JOIN THE BOARD

Jane DuBovy was elected to the Santa Monica Tennis Club as Tournament Director. She is an attorney who represents special needs children with her own law firm in Pacific Palisades. She has been an avid tennis player for 3 years. She currently participates in the Westside League, 3.5 B1 level out of Westwood where her captain is fellow board member, Carol Reston. In the recent past, she has represented SMTC in interclub matches, played on a women's USTA doubles team and last year even captained the SMTC USTA women's 3.5 team. There are times when it is rumored that she plays mornings and nights.

Jane's purpose in joining the board is to share some new ideas so that SMTC can grow to the size it was during its heyday. After hearing the stories of 500+ members, tournaments filled to capacity and even professionals dropping by to provide tennis entertainment, she is determined to bring SMTC back to that prominence. With hopes for a "live ball" court, the ease of using "pay pal" and tennis challenges to various other Santa Monica organizations she hopes that SMTC will attract new and enthusiastic members that she can tap to volunteer to help, come tournament time.

DAVID KING: For the last six years, David has been working as an office manager for an Architecture & Construction firm in West Los Angeles, building modern single family residences by renowned architects. Prior to this position, he was the marketing and business manager for a real estate investment trust in Century City, managing triple net commercial leases.

David also has an art & design background. He graduated from the Santa Monica College of Design, Art and Architecture with a degree in fine art. He is an accomplished painter and has artworks in the Laguna and Newport Harbor Art Museums as well as significant collections in the Los Angeles area.

After graduating from UCLA with a degree in Film and Television, he spent a stint in feature film production - as a development and production executive at Fox and Sony.

David has played tennis since the age of 10, most actively in the last five years. He has been a member of the Santa Monica Tennis Club for four years. He is active in the USTA. In 2010, he captained a Men's USTA League team comprised substantially of SMTC members which went to Sectionals. As recently as October of this year he captained the USTA Men's Doubles League, where they ended up one match short winning their section.

David sent this message in December:

Dear Members: I'm very happy to say that I've been appointed Membership Director for the Santa Monica Tennis Club. Firstly, thanks to all of the members who've renewed already, and - if you haven't - don't forget to get your dues in A.S.A.P. It'll make me look good - and you can rest assured (and eat to your heart's delight over the coming weeks) knowing that you can count on a year of tennis, tennis and more tennis!

I'm looking forward to a banner year for the club and to do all I can to increase membership and enliven the club.

Best wishes and Happy Holidays!
